FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Borah Families,

I hope you are enjoying your summer and creating wonderful memories with family and friends. As we approach the start of a new school year, I want to make sure you have the information you need to prepare for a successful year at Borah High School.

Whether you are new to Borah or a returning family, I hope the information in this newsletter answers many of your questions and helps you feel ready for the year ahead. Providing every student with a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment is our highest priority. We are also committed to ensuring that every student has a trusted adult at Borah.

If there is anything we can do to support your child or your family, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at trevor.mckenna@boiseschools.org. You can also visit our school website for important updates and information. Our school office will reopen on Friday, August 1.

BORAH HIGH SCHOOL AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) uses a holistic approach that empowers students with the skills, support, and opportunities needed to succeed in rigorous coursework, prepare for college and careers, and develop as leaders within our community. Through academic support, college and career exploration, a focus on organization, collaboration, and critical thinking, AVID helps students build confidence and achieve their goals.

We invite you to learn more about the Borah AVID program by stopping by our table during registration or visiting our Borah AVID website. Hear firsthand about the impact of AVID by watching our Alumni Spotlight Video featuring Borah AVID alumni Patrick Ngalamulume. For additional questions, email Borah AVID Coordinator amy.everson@boiseschools.org.

FACILITIES UPGRADES

This summer, several exciting improvement projects have been completed across the Borah campus. Some of the highlights include a renovated football locker room, a much-needed HVAC upgrade in our cafeteria, and new epoxy flooring in our shop classroom.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and resources provided by the Boise School District and Borah Football Boosters that made these improvements possible. Each enhancement ensures that Borah continues to be a place where students can thrive.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to campus to enjoy these improvements and another outstanding year at Borah!

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE - MISS A DAY, MISS A LOT

  • Attendance Matters! Students must attend at least 90% of each semester (no more than 9 absences) to earn credit. Seven (7) or more tardies may also result in loss of credit. Students arriving more than 20 minutes late are counted as absent.
  • Excused absences (parent-approved, including illness without a doctor's note, family vacations, and personal/family matters) still count toward the 9-day attendance limit.
  • Medically excused absences with verified medical documentation do not count toward the attendance limit.
  • Families wishing to appeal attendance-related loss of credit must submit an appeal within five school days of receiving notification of the student's 10th absence.

ASB STICKER REMINDER

All Borah student-athletes are required to purchase an ASB sticker, which helps directly fund Borah athletics and our sports programs.

Beginning July 25, families can purchase ASB stickers through School Cash Online. Parents who have not yet created an account will need to do so before making a purchase.

Special Purchase Links (available July 25):

Borah Athletes Grades 10 - 12: $30 ASB Sticker

9th Grade Athletes: $18 discounted ASB sticker (required even if an ASB sticker was purchased at their junior high)

Homeschool/Non-Borah Athletes: $30 ASB sticker

Please contact your coach or Vince Mann (vince.mann@boiseschools.org) if you have questions. Thank you for helping ensure all athletes are ready for the upcoming season!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SOCIAL WORKER, BECKY WOODLAND

Welcome back! I am looking forward to another exciting year at Borah. There are resources available to support your student as you get ready for another school year. Please feel free to contact me with assistance with school fees, school clothes, graduation gowns, and school supplies. I am here to help!
Becky Woodland - rebecca.woodland@boiseschools.org or (208) 854-6916.

DOES YOUR STUDENT NEED EXTRA SUPPORT?

Borah is offering support groups to all students and are accessed by both those seeking connections and those needing extra support. The purpose of a support group within the high school setting is to provide participants with a comforting, safe environment where they feel free to express themselves. In addition to providing emotional support, group participation also allows students to establish meaningful and trusting relationships with their peers. A survey will be available to all students to voluntarily take during the first weeks of school through their email to express interest in participation. In order to participate, students will need a signed permission slip from their guardian. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact our school social worker Becky Woodland at rebecca.woodland@boiseschools.org or (208) 854-6916.

MOMENT OF SILENCE LEGISLATION

Daily Moment of Silence (Required by State Law): Beginning this school year, Idaho Code 33-1639 (House Bill 623) requires schools to provide students with a daily moment of silence for quiet, individual reflection for at least sixty (60) seconds. Students may use this time for reflection, meditation, prayer, or another silent activity of their choosing, provided it does not inerfere with others. Parents are encouraged to speak to their children on how they may use this time.

We will share more information on what this will look like at Borah in the near future.
